Thermoelectric Coolers
Thermoelectric coolers are the latest in the models of coolers for campers, barbecue enthusiasts, and picnickers. A hybrid of both the ice chest and a fridge, these models are the most effective cooling model around. They now come in a variety of sizes and models with many amenities such as shoulder straps and extra pockets for carrying accessories and condiments. Even though they contain electrical equipment they are still very sturdy and can be used just like you would an ice chest.
How do they work? These models have an electric motor in them that cools the interior of the box just like a fridge would. The cord plugs into a socket at home or more likely into your vehicle's electrical outlet while en route to your destination. It may seem like this is a bit silly, because as soon as you are outdoors, you no longer have electricity. Not so - these models are built with thick insulating plastic that retains the cold air of the interior and keeps out the hot air of the outdoors just like an ice chest would. This eliminates the mess that the ice from chests often creates and makes it so you don't have to wrap food heavily to prevent it from becoming soaked.
There are a couple drawbacks. The most obvious is that you must chill your cooler in advance rather than just throw ice in it. Likewise, if the unit does start to warm up, you'll have to find some electricity, which may not be possible. Additionally, you can do convenient cooling tricks like setting it in a nearby body of water to keep it cool because of the electrical parts.
