Picnic Snacks

While most picnicking involves just sitting down for a whole meal there are some great picnic snacks that can become a meal unto themselves or be a nice accoutrement to enjoying wine or as pre-meal appetizers. What are the best options? Well, for everyone it's going to be different, but there are few ideas that are always sure to impress.

Cheeses are always a good choice. Aside from your basic cheddars, which can be very good and expensive if very well aged ones are used, there are a large variety of hard and soft cheeses available to add a bit of exciting flavor to the rest of your meal. Feta and mozzarella are both exciting and very common types of cheese that go with almost any meal. Blue veined cheeses are a less commonly used cheese (ones like stilton and gorgonzola), but are nonetheless full of flavor. Brie is probably one of the more popular because it easily spreads on bread.

Cured meats are also a good idea. Salami style meats and others like prosciutto can add a bit of saltiness to wet your appetite, and they are great exploration of flavor as many local producers have sprung up with many types of new flavors.

Fruit is a great healthy option. When the weather's nice, it's also good for farmers so many fresh and flavorful varieties that can't be found during the cooler months are available. These aren't very filling but they are definitely exciting and fit with the season. Cherries, strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are perhaps the most common, but peaches and plum are also great as well.
