Picnic silverware is a bit different than your normal utensils. For one, it's not about the looks, it's about practicality. These utensils are made to be effective as both eating instruments, but also as space savers. Though practical, they are also not meant to be too expensive. Since so much is getting moved around in the outdoors during a picnic, it's very possible to lose some utensils so you don't want to have to bemoan anything special.

What it comes down to is, is that these utensils are smaller and made with cheaper materials. That doesn't mean they bend in your mouth however. In fact, because they are made for the outdoors, they need to be much stronger than a delicate indoor fork, spoon or knife.

The best way to get started with these is to buy a set specifically designed for picnicking. You can find many of these kits from plethora of chain stores and online retailers. Purchase a kit the right size for your family or usual picnicking party size.

Another option to consider is being a full set of dishware and utensils with a hamper. This will hold all of your plates and utensils using straps and pockets that will keep them from jingling around. Plus everything will be in a one nice spot as opposed to scattered in multiple bags or put away in different parts of your house.

There are stainless and plastic utensils that you can find. If you have children, it's a good idea to get the plastic to keep them from damaging their mouths. However, for adults stainless steel will last much longer.
