Picnic Sandwiches

When it comes to picnicking, picnic sandwiches seem like the obvious main meal when heading out for a nice meal in the park, while camping, or out at the beach. But what exactly to bring for such a meal. There are of course a plethora of options available so here are a few ideas to get you started.

First, consider the types of breads out there. It is no longer the days of white or wheat. You can find pretty much any style of bread available - rye, pumpernickel, sourdough, for example. Furthermore, you can find it any a huge amount of shapes of loaves. This means more options for the type of sandwich you can make. While the soft sandwich loaves of your youth are probably some of the most enjoyable many breads that are baked into rolls or baguette shapes travel a bit better because of their firmer crust. This doesn't mean that don't have a nice soft interior.

Second, you now have way more meats available. Aside from the standard American meats of ham, roast beef, and turkey, to name a few, imported meats are way more common in most grocery stores. These can include salami meats like soppressata, or long cured hams like prosciutto. These can be a bit more expensive, but they pack a huge flavor.

Whatever you do for your favorite sandwich, keep the elements separate until you sit down. Using a nice mustard won't mean much once it makes the bread completely soggy. Also, consider many of the fine plastic containers that can keep your loaves safe from being crushed while on the move.
