Picnic Desserts

Picnic desserts may seem like an odd idea. When most people think of that part of the meal, they think ice cream or delicate cakes. These aren't something you want to drag around with you in a hamper or cooler that may get a big jostled while you travel. However, this doesn't need to be all one thinks when planning a nice picnic meal. Many sweets are available that don't require careful handling.

One of the simplest and easiest desserts is just good fruit. This is not only a healthy option, but is easy to move around and usually appreciate by all. More than just apples, instead take advantage of the many bountiful seasonal fruits that are more delicate and delicious. This includes berries - raspberries, blueberries, strawberries - and fruits like plums and peaches. To help you enjoy your meal easier, set up little cups of fruit in advance. If this isn't exciting enough for you, consider making a flavored whipped cream or pudding to mix with your fruit to add a little softness and creaminess. These can be flavored with sugars and fruits, but also items like brandy and wine.

Another option is to eat a sturdier cake like a bunt cake. These cakes are still light, but many of the recipes are intended to be served cold, which works great for picnicking. These are a bit more flavorful as is and most don't have any more creams or frostings that may get mashed during transportation, except of course for maybe a little bit of icing.

Also, consider many of the plastic containers available that can protect your food regardless of its delicacy.
