Depending upon the seriousness and intensity of the individual, you may be faced with either simple to do delicious choices or meats that require hours and hours of cooking and smoking. For the average person, without any special equipment, great food shouldn't have to be a huge ordeal. The best choice is to keep it simple, but also add some variety to your usual spread of foods so that you can try something new and maybe even give something unexpected to the most ardent fan of tailgating. Here are a few basic ideas that should keep you doing well when you head out to the game.

Burgers probably play one of the biggest roles in the tailgating culinary scene. One way to switch up your normal American cheese and beef routine is to use a different kind of meat. Lamb is probably one of the best choices for grilling, although there are many other choices available in stores like bison and deer. Of course, you can get really out there and find alligator and ostrich meat as well. Regardless of what you choose, you'll have a much stronger flavor that will definitely turn some heads. You don't even have to switch up the rest of your setup.

However, this can also been a fun choice as well. Try out some new cheeses aside from Swiss and cheddar. Gorgonzola is very strong, but goes great with beef and other meats. Aged cheddar is much sharper and provides a familiar, but new taste. Fresh mozzarella is also a great choice that is close to pizza cheese, but a lot better. Additionally, different buns like chiabatta can switch up the routine and provide a whole lot more flavor than your standard white buns will as well as a new texture. These buns also sop up a lot of juices without falling apart so they are very practical.

Add some different vegetables to your routine. For any salads or on your burgers as well. Instead of regular tomatoes, use heirloom. Instead of lettuce, use arugula or mache. Each of these will produce interesting variations and give you a great flavor that you can't resist.

Fresh herbs instead of dried herbs, cut the day of your event, will also be an important additive. You can still use many of the same recipes you've always used, but these will taste like whole new foods.
