Gourmet Picnic
A gourmet picnic can sound a bit contradictory. Food for picnicking is almost always barbecued food or quick finger food that is crammed into a cooler and eaten in a hurry. This by no means has to be the case. If time and consideration is taken with your food, you can enjoy a wonderful meal just like you would at home. Maybe one even better.
First, consider your options. Are you barbecuing? If you are, you've got quite a few choices. To begin with, you can opt out of the standard burger patties and move into something a little more complex. Now you can still have burgers, but think about using alternative ingredients such as lame or even exotic products like bison. Both of these make great burgers with a big of extra grassiness. Along the same burger line, instead of cheddar cheese you can use almost any cheese out there; however blue cheeses like gorgonzola are a wonderful additive to a traditional burger.
Second, many people have salads when they go out picnicking. Instead of doing a store bought package, instead make your own. Here again, try to use quality ingredients that you may not use usually. For example, arugula is a delicious bitter green that is light and way more flavorful than iceberg lettuce. Making your own dressing at home is a way to use alternative flavors like balsamic or red wine vinegar. Cheeses like chevre are a very salty and lively addition compared to cheddar as well.
Look around and find a few nice ingredients and as long as you store them well, you'll be sure to have a special day out.
